It Doesn't Have to be Wood

There are plenty of options nowadays when it comes to materials for building your deck. Undoubtedly, the first that will come to your mind is, of course, wood. It is the long-standing choice for most deck projects and deck builders alike.

Unfortunately, there are several drawbacks to a wood deck. First off is the time consumed by the maintenance of the wooden deck. There are also the possibilities of rot, decay, and insect damage. Not to mention exposed nails and burning your feet in the summer time.

So what alternatives are there? One you may want to consider is composite decking. Composite decking is made from a mixture of plastic chemicals and sawdust/wood. It is made to look like wood. Some of the advantages of installing composite decking are that it requires much less maintenance, there are no exposed nails, and it is much easier to install. Depending on the type of composite material used, it can cost more than wood, but with the lower maintenance costs and longer lifespan, it is certainly worth considering.

Another alternative to wood is aluminum decking. Aluminum provides a very clean look. It also requires little maintenance compared to wood. It will not crack, warp or rot and doesn’t require stain. It also will not rust.

So as you can see, although wood is the commonly chosen material for deck projects, there are alternatives which may be just as good and possibly better.
